SMED is a browser-based tool for analysing changeovers. It helps you move from a clear picture of the current state to a shorter downtime and better coordinated teamwork.
The program continues to develop. User feedback, problem reports and suggestions help guide its next steps.
From observation to a chart
Enter activities in a table or arrange them directly on a Gantt chart. For each activity, record its duration, the person and machine element involved, and whether it takes place during or outside downtime. The chart shows the sequence of tasks and people working in parallel.
SMED calculates and displays:
- downtime and totals for internal and external activities,
- the critical path and activity slack,
- each person's working and waiting time,
- warnings about external activities during downtime and scheduling conflicts.
Current and target states
Copy a completed analysis to test improvement ideas: move preparation before downtime, change the sequence, perform tasks in parallel or shorten an activity. The program immediately recalculates the schedule and downtime. Public projects include an example laser welding cell with a proposed target state.
Working with results
Save your analysis as a project. Export the chart as PNG or SVG and copy the activity table to a spreadsheet. The tool works on computers and phones without software installation.
Who is it for?
Lean and Kaizen leaders, process and maintenance engineers, production managers and teams seeking to see how the work of several people affects changeover time.
