Kanban

What does it mean?

Kanban can be translated as "signal" or "production on demand" or "replenishment on demand".

Training Objective

The traditional way of the multi stage production steering is scheduling, where each production area is producing according to the before defined production schedule. This can lead to over production, missing parts or subassemblies, waiting for subproducts etc.

There is no ideal solution for production steering, because each way of steering has its advantages and disadvantages. In the system called Lean Manufacturing Kanban is the way how parts and subproducts are replenished on demand, using minimal and controlled buffers (supermarkets). But Kanban is just a small part of Lean puzzles. If the Kanban System will be not accompanied by changes in 5S, TPM, SMED than the effects will not last and the Lean system will fail.

During Kanban training I will present, how to introduce Kanban System, how to calculate supermarket levels, number of boxes (cards) in the loop, how to plan and design storage area, how to ensures correct flow of Kanban Cards etc. In addition I will emphasis what traps can be expected on each introduction stage and how they can be prevent and – what is most challenging – how to maintain the Kanban System, which is a living system, which must react on changes in the environment.

I have prepared for trainees simulation showing how the Kanban System is operating and what are benefits and traps.
